About the event
Through this class, participants will experience and focus on creating an arrangement celebrating the new year. For this style, the most common branch materials are: pine, bamboo, and plum. Pine, which is an evergreen, is particularly popular as it can be arranged in a modern, stylish manner depending on its use. Be sure to make the branches face upward or forward to express dynamism. These branch materials are then arranged with other flowers such as: orchid, rose, chrysanthemum, narcissus, freesia, camellia, lily, or red berries. Decorative and/or ornamental kale is also a fun material oftentimes seen in a new year’s arrangement. Whichever materials are added, make sure they harmonize well within the arrangement. Either containers for nageire (the upright style) or moribana (the low, shallow style plus kenzan) can be used. The overall arrangement should present lightness and joy with bright tones of color.
Gold and silver paper strings known as Mizuhiki will be used to add a special touch to the arrangement. Mizuhiki is the traditional Japanese art of knot-typing that uses decorative cords or paper strings to express emotions. For ikebana, mizuhiki are used for special occasions and/or holidays; use them to show extra feeling within your arrangement. "Hinode" (the rising sun) will be demonstrated with mizuhiki. This is the name given because once the strings are tied, they look like a rising sun.
• Class will be held at Yanagi Botanic Arts Studio located inside Yobel/ The Look Up Gallery building.
