About the event

Through this class, participants will learn how to create an ikebana arrangement with fruiting branches, specifically crabapples.  However, any fruiting material is appropriate; branches with seeds, nuts, or berries can give the arranger an unique expression and attract viewers.  The shapes, colors, volume, and rhythm of the fruits on the branches, regardless of size, are all things to consider when using fruiting materials.

First, consider your container and choose appropriately so that the container can hold the branches in place and not topple over.  Fruit branches are oftentimes heavier than other materials, so you’ll need to pay particular attention to the weight of the fruit so that you can find the right physical balance as well as visual balance.  A nageire style container can be used and weighted down with water and rocks to hold the branch.  A moribana style container can be used as well, but make sure you use a quality kenzan and firmly fix your branches in the kenzan so that they are secure.  Metal containers are great because they are weighted and can definitely hold the weight of a fruit branch.

When arranging, think about the composition, including at what position the fruit branch should be placed, how many fruits should be used, and how the fruits should be balanced with the lines and lengths of the branches in the composition.  Then add the subordinate materials to enhance the overall arrangement while still giving focus and emphasis to the fruits.

• There are two ticket options for this class: purchase a container for class or bring your own container. Please choose the option that works best for you.

• Class will be held at Yanagi Botanic Arts Studio located inside Yobel/ The Look Up Gallery building.
