About the event

Through this class, participants will learn nageire which means “thrown in” and is always arranged in a tall, upright container.  A kenzan is not used for nageire, therefore, certain techniques are required to fix the stems in place.  There are two methods in which to fix nageire: tate-no-soegi-dome (vertical style fixture) and jumonji- dome (cross-bar fixture).  The vertical style fixture consists of using cut branches with split ends to create an interlocking fixture that is inserted into the container.  The crossbar fixture consists of using small cut branches that create a cross-shape and is inserted into the container.  Choosing the right branches to create either one of these fixtures is important; make sure the branches are thick and strong enough to be used as a fixture.  A branch that is too weak or too thin, will not work.

In nageire, the mouth size of the container is not very large.  As all the shushi (main stems) and jushi (subordinate stems) are arranged within these confines, you should pay special attention to neatness and not let it appear congested.  A key feature to nageire is to make sure that the strong line of shin is represented and that soe and hikae are fixed securely in place.  The stems should reach vigorously upwards and out from the mouth of the container.  The length of the main stem is measured based on the container.  Pour in the water up to the level of the material’s stem bases and then fill up with water to the rim when finished.  In both moribana and nageire, the connected line of tips of the three main stems forms a scalene triangle which has sides of unequal length.  Ikebana is a creation of forms with plant materials in which the space created by this scalene triangle is a desirable feature.
